About
The “French as a Second Language – Resources Designed to Inspire!” website was developed by the French as a Second Language Consortium of the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada, with financial support from member provinces and territories and the Government of Canada.

Our story
Established in 2014, CMEC’s French as a Second Language Consortium is made up of ministers of education across Canada, with the exception of Quebec, whose mandate is to support and promote student achievement as it relates to learning French as a second language (FSL).
While provinces and territories are fully responsible for the development and implementation of FSL programs, the Consortium endeavours to realize the following goals collaboratively:
- Regularly review the status of FSL education across Canada.
- Identify common needs related to FSL learning and teaching and develop resources to meet those needs.
- Promote student success in FSL programs.
French as a second language programs in Canada
Across Canada, French as a second language (FSL) programs are offered to meet the various needs of learners. These programs generally fall into one of the following categories:
- Core French
A core program that focuses on acquiring fundamental listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in French. It introduces students to the French language. - French Immersion
An intensive program where most subjects are taught in French, allowing students to acquire strong language skills and achieve a high level of fluency. - Extended/Intensive French
A targeted program designed to accelerate French language acquisition through intensive learning.
To date, three pan-Canadian projects have been completed and are featured on the Consortium’s website. Other projects and resources will be added over time.
